| Site Description | The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem stands as one of Christianity's most sacred and ancient sites, built over the cave traditionally venerated as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Commissioned by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century and later rebuilt by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, it is among the oldest continuously operating churches in the world.
Entering through the famously low "Door of Humility," visitors stoop to pass inside — a feature added in medieval times to prevent horsemen from riding through. The interior is a dim, atmospheric space of marble columns, ancient mosaics partially visible beneath the floor, and centuries of accumulated devotion. Beneath the main altar, a narrow staircase descends into the Grotto of the Nativity, where a silver fourteen-pointed star marks the traditional spot of Christ's birth.
