USS Arizona Operational History and Significance

USS Arizona (BB-39) was a Pennsylvania-class battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy in 1916 and later assigned to the Pacific Fleet. On December 7, 1941, Arizona was moored at Pearl Harbor when Japanese forces attacked. A bomb detonated the ship’s forward ammunition magazines, causing a catastrophic explosion that sank the battleship and killed 1,177 crew members.

Today, the USS Arizona remains on the bottom of Pearl Harbor and serves as both a historic artifact and a war grave. The site is one of the most significant physical places associated with the December 7 attack and the entry of the United States into World War II.

The National Park Service stewards the USS Arizona Memorial and associated resources, working to preserve, document, protect, and interpret the site and the stories of those who served and died aboard Arizona. The site provides an important connection between the physical remains of the battleship, the people associated with it, and the larger history of Pearl Harbor and World War II.
